Make Room for Space Music

You’ve probably heard of chill music, ambient music, and world music.  But what about space music?  The term isn’t as “out there,” as you might believe!  In fact, it is quickly becoming recognized as a sub-genre of new age music.

Even though space music is more often described as a feeling, or a mood evoked from listening, perhaps its not surprising to hear that its often played at planetariums and in film soundtracks.

As described on Wikipedia:

“Space music ranges from simple to complex sonic textures, often (though not exclusively) lacking conventional melodic, rhythmic, or vocal components, typically evoking a “continuum of spatial imagery and emotion”, beneficial introspection, attentiveness for deep listening, subtle trance effects called “spacey”, (defined by the Compact Oxford Dictionary as “drifting and ethereal”) and psychoacoustic spatial perceptions, particularly, sensations of flying, floating, cruising, gliding, or hovering.”

Traveling the Road to Lhasa

Travel along with me, on the road to Lhasa.  The name of this city in the clouds (one of the highest capitals in the world) literally means “place of the gods,” and is the seat of the Dalai Lama and capital of the Tibet Autonomous Region in the People’s Republic of China.  While it may be quite a hike to reach the 3,490 metres (11,450 feet) elevation, the journey is well worth it.  It is a transformative experience.

When you consider Tibetan monks, images of meditation and peace probably come to mind.  These holy men are well-known for their chant Om Mani Padme Hum,” which roughly translates to,”Hail to the Jewel in the Lotus. Hail to Him who is the Jewel in the Lotus.  The chants help them along their spiritual journey to achieve enlightenment, or Buddahood: a state that is said to be one of “continuous bliss mixed with a simultaneous cognition of emptiness, the true nature of reality.”

One of the most popular uses for new age music is meditation.  Through relaxing melodies, poetic lyrics, and hypnotic rhythms, popular new age music groups provide a background for opening the mind and heart to the greatest mysteries in the universe.

Most of the people making and selling new age music have a passionate dedication to the spiritual advancement of our planet.  They understand that we have reached an important point in human evolution where our individual and collective spirit is pushing forward past purely instinctual and primal needs toward an existence based in higher frequencies of vibration and light.
